A dog that has been in contact with many other dogs, perhaps at a shelter situation may have gotten an upper respiratory infection. A loud, noisy cough is often a characteristic of infectious canine tracheobronchitis. Some cases can be mild with the pet showing few other changes, but in other cases the dog may be quite ill and show a lack of appetite, be lethargic and have some respiratory difficulties. Depending on the degree of severity the dog will need rest, a good diet, perhaps some antibiotics and should be isolated from other dogs to avoid spreading the disease. More complicated cases may need further intervention as determined by the veterinarian.

Many dogs experience gas. The problem can be dietary or medical. The first step is a physical examination to rule out a medical problem. The examination should include a fecal check for intestinal parasites and perhaps tests of pancreatic function. If all is normal, in some cases changing the diet may help. Purina ONE Lamb and Rice Formula is one possible choice for a different diet.

It is quite normal for a young dog to investigate their environment and chew on items as part of that process. It is important to provide plenty of appropriate chew toys to avoid damage to household items and to prevent the puppy from ingesting dangerous items. When the puppy cannot be supervised, she should be placed in a safe, dog proofed area. Proper chew toys should be provided. These can be hard rubber toys that have been stuffed with food to make them more attractive. In some situations a puppy might enjoy manipulating feeder toy to get their meal. Rotating toys and providing different ones daily can help direct normal puppy chewing to the right place.

At no time should yogurt be placed into the ear canal. Chronic ear infections require veterinary intervention to help them get better. In many cases the dog needs to have a culture of the ear taken to determine the cause of the infection; yeast, bacteria, or fungus. Once that is known appropriate therapy can be started. In some cases the ear canal will need to be cleaned out under anesthesia to remove the material accumulated so that medication can reach the source of the infection. Many chronic infections require treatment for several weeks or months to adequately treat the problem.

Depending on the time of year, a dog or puppy may loose a great deal of his undercoat. A puppy will also loose some of their "puppy" fur as he grows an adult coat. An infection or allergy could also cause hair loss. If there are bald areas where the hair is not growing back or the dog is scratching and pulling out the hair, a veterinary visit is needed.
My Story
My Story
Hi, my name is Ridley. I am a Border Collie/Lab mix (with possibly something else mixed in because I am so small). This is my baby picture and when my Mom saw me on the internet she couldn't resist me! Unfortunately, somebody did not spay my real Mom and she had seven puppies that nobody wanted. Three of us were rescued by a kind lady at the Lyon's Den Rescue in Pennsyvlania but the fate of my other siblings is unknown.I stayed at the rescue for quite some time, you see, not many people want black dogs. Isn't that sad? I was so cute and fluffy and such a nice boy that I thought someone would surely give me a new home right away. Thank goodness my Mom found me! I did not have a very good time on the car ride home - I get car sick, so the 2 hour drive was pretty rough for me. But, once I got to my new home I got to meet my new big brother, Gus, and boy was I excited - it made me forget all about that icky, bumpy car ride.
I settled in to my new home immediately. My Mom is SO nice. I love to snuggle with her and I like her to hold my paw - I feel so safe when she does that.
I am also very smart just like my big brother. I quickly learned how to ring the bell at the back door to go out and sometimes I like to just stand at the door and ring it to hear the sound it makes. My Mom taught me some tricks, too. She taught me to sit, stay, lay down, jump, shake and bark.
I'm so glad that my Mom rescued me and she always tells everyone that rescue dogs are the BEST!
